A 15 day journey that is just the start of a destination beyond cancer

As in years past we were humbled, and honoured to play host to this incredible event and to meet the incredible national riders and national volunteer who along with 56 corporate sponsors, 192 rest stops who welcomed the national team along their 7,000 km journey, and thousands of average Canadians proved, once again, the compassion of Canadians can never be under estimated.

Raising over $1,500,000 for kids cancer research, the national team taught a nation that a few committed people can truly make a meaningful difference in the life of a child.

From each and every one of the events our Foundation hosts I learn something special, and this year is no different. This year, and this event in particular touched me like no other; and the reason for this was simple. I saw the personal impact this event can have.

I saw the transformation in national team members who understood -  truly understood – the power that ONE PERSON can make in the life of a kid with cancer and in turn engaged in amazing feats of fundraising and community outreach.

I saw a transformation in our relationships with the charities we support and the power of truly working in tandem to make meaningful and substantive changes in the health outcomes of kids with cancer. And once again I saw the awesome spirit and strength of the hundreds of kids cancer survivors we met along the way. Regardless of the disabilities that the cancer had left them with, the kids came. They came to ride with us, they came to speak and support us at community events, and they came simply to support what we were attempting to do. To them and to the national team a huge and personal thank you for dramatically reinforcing again for me what is important in our life and how much we all get when we give to others.

To the national team thank you for your commitment, your passion, and your fundraising. You are all truly remarkable people. To the 192 rest stops and the thousands of volunteers who helped along the 7,000 km journey: words can’t express the gratitude for the way you welcomed us, fed us and brought your communities together to support the cause. To the thousands of Canadians who donated to the cause, thank you for your ongoing support and generousity as it was you who helped us reach the $1,500,000 goal. And finally to our incredible sponsors, your financial and personal support make this event possible and allowed us to ensure that, once again, 100% of the personal donations made by Canadians go directly to the charity our Foundation supports.

This year’s event truly touched more Canadians than ever before and left lasting impressions that will have a very real, very tangible impact in raising the awareness of childhood cancer in Canada. I speak for all the people involved in the event when I say we are truly blessed and deeply proud to have such a wonderful caring community.
You have our commitment to continue the fight until parents no longer hear the words “your child has cancer”.

And if you want to get involved, as a sponsor, or a volunteer, or an ambassador family or someone who just wants to help send me a note at jeff.rushton@ctcacf.org. We would love to have you join the fight until we are at our destination; a Destination Beyond Cancer.

Your friend,

Jeff Rushton

Lower Sackville

Halifax Inside Ride – from Mark Magner

The multi-megawatt energy and excitement of an Inside Ride event can’t be experienced in the silent photos offered here. In the large atrium at Halifax’s IWK children’s hospital on September 23rd, the driving music pulsed throughout the building. Teams riding stationary bikes for charity yelled and bounced around encouraging their teammates. Even the spectators who gathered were dancing and clapping and yelling. Then the full national Sears National Kids Cancer Ride team arrived, on their final stop just three kilometers from the end of their epic journey across Canada to raise money for children’s cancer treatments. The excitement of the event went over the top. The atrium was packed with dancing, singing people. Nobody, anywhere, was standing still. If it took only energy to beat children’s cancer, it would have been beaten at this event. Thanks to the teams and volunteers who put the Inside Ride together, and to the national team riders who pushed it over the top.

The ladies at the Sears in Saint John were absolutely amazing. After the challenges of Day 13 the Cora’s breakfast and smiling faces got the team back on track. New Brunswick provided a beautiful setting for the riders to enjoy their last day as a solo team before rejoining the other groups for the last day into Halifax. Photos courtesy of Jesse East:

Martin at the Sears outlet store took great car of us and even provided an escort out of town. However a few wrong turns and some difficult terrain created a long hard day for the riders before reaching Edmundston NB.

Even though the riders had to climb to the top of a huge hill the food and hospitality at the Best Western in Edmundston was worth it.

After overcoming a problem with their maps, Team 2 rolled out of Edmundston on a beautiful clear day. The air was crisp, just eight degrees, and with their toques pulled down they climbed the first hill out of town.

When they arrived at the first rest stop of the day, after a 50K+ ride, they were welcomed by Sears staff with homemade chicken soup. As they rested and ate among the appliances in the Sears store, we decided to do an impromptu commercial for LG, one of the ride’s major sponsors, by posing seductively with one of their refrigerators.

The next portion of the ride, 38km to Perth Andover, would scare the breath out of lesser riders but the team finished it exhilarated. There were numerous long, hard climbs up to New Brunswick’s heights, with spectacular views and thrilling long rides down. The team was pumped and excited when they finished this leg of their journey, some members declaring it one of their better rides.

When they got to Florenceville-Bristol after another scenic ride along the St John river, Pam Smith of Sears was waiting for them with a pot of her homemade vegetable bean soup, a favourite from last year’s ride and welcomed again by riders and volunteers.

After brief stops for pictures at a couple of famous covered bridges, and a tough climb to the end of the ride, the team finished the day with a fine barbecue prepared by staff from New York Fries.
