I had the privilege of being a National Rider on the 2011 Sears National Kids Cancer Ride. We rode across this beautiful country of ours in 16 days and it was truly a life changing journey. A journey that seemed to show me on a daily basis that “life is too short”. Whether it was the daily morning dedications to survivors and angels or meeting the families at our rest stops along the way. Life is too short. That while change was hard, the status quo wasn’t any easier. 2012 was a year of change and some trying times. But it’s time to stop navel gazing and get back on the bike and help those families who are dealing with the biggest challenge in life – childhood cancer.

I am riding in honour of Layla. I worked with her mom, Mary Ellen, at ICE Integrated Communications and Entertainment back in the 90′s. After giving birth to Layla in March 2008, Mary-Ellen was diagnosed with a genetic disease called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2B (MEN Type 2B). In January 2010 she had her three children tested and discovered that Layla also carried this gene. In March 29, 2010 Layla underwent a total Thyroidectomy and the results determined that Layla had Metastic Thyroid Carcinoma (Thyroid Cancer). Both Layla and Mary Ellen will be on hormone and steroid therapy for the rest of their lives.

Tired legs and saddle sores from riding an average of 150 km a day are nothing compared to what the kids endure during their cancer treatments. So on September 16, 2013 I will be joining the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride as it comes through Toronto and riding with the team to Halifax. I am very excited to once again be part of this awesome group of cyclists and volunteers striving to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research and in-hospital programs.

I can’t do this alone and I hope you will support me in this journey. 100% OF YOUR DONATION makes its way to the charities and programs that have been carefully vetted by Coast to Coast to receive funds.
