Destination – Beyond Cancer!

I have always loved cycling and spending time in nature.  There have been many different adventures that have captivated me over the years… travelling, cycling, skiing, climbing, marathons, ironman triathlons and the Transrockies to name a few.  All of these activities for me were ways of dissolving my preconceived limits of what was possible, while embracing time outdoors.  There are few things, other than my family, that fill me up more than the sensations you experience while playing in nature.  Cycling on even the busiest of highways still creates this amazing sense of “oneness” with this world we call home.  Combine cycling with my passion for helping others, and my Coast to Coast adventure begins…

In the summer of 2012, I had the pleasure of participating in the Tour For Kids Alberta  I shared a tribute to Ryan Carrington, a 3 1/2 year Canmore boy who died of brain cancer in January 2012.  The magnitude by which this one boy’s life affected my family and our community is indescribable.  Every person at Tour For Kids had a similar story of a loved one lost or struggling through the effects of cancer.  The number of close friends & family I have personally lost to cancer… grandparents, aunts, uncles, young adult friends and children… is far too many.  After hearing all of these stories, I felt compelled to do more.  Cycling across Canada with the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride this September is a way that I can create more awareness and provide some much needed funding to childhood cancer programs and research.

Each day we are given an opportunity to choose how we will experience the situations in front of us.  Break down the barriers that we’ve placed around this disease and do at least one thing to help create amazing lives beyond cancer.  Together, as a community, we can make an enormous difference in the lives of countless families, instill hope and find a cure.
