A child can leave you smiling and make the worst day seem so much better with their simple words or actions. I have been blessed with this by my nephews, nieces, and friends children. Sharing their stories like a proud parent. It is in that spirit that I have decided to honour these brave kids and their families affected by childhood cancer by cycling from Vancouver to Halifax to raise money and awareness for this great cause . No child should have to suffer from any disease and this one particular struck a chord in my heart. The reason I chose this cause in particular one is it’s model of 100% of your donations going to helping the children.
I began 5yrs ago doing the 3 day “Tourforkids ” Alberta ride which sends kids with cancer to camp where they can just be kids. No hospitals, needles or being judged by others for their condition. Since beginning this ride I have witnessed the genuine gratitude of the campers and their families. You can see the energy in their eyes and their passion to help others who may be facing this uphill battle. It was a lesson for me to give back and be passionate about something bigger than me.
It is because of them that I am inspired to cycle across Canada on thier behalf. I am physically able and will have many of them in my heart to fuel me each kilometer.
“Success in life has nothing to do with what you get, it’s what you give that truly matters.”
Please help me on this physical and spiritual journey, and be a part of “Riding Somewhere Meaningful” with me. I appreciate all your help.
Here’s a little more info on why I am riding and need your support:
Why am I riding from Coast to Coast? At any given time, cancer holds 10,000 Canadian children in its grip. It robs them, and their families, of the laughter and joy that should be part of every childhood. Riding in the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride will channel my physical, mental and emotional energy into something much greater – helping brave children return to life as regular kids again. I’ll share the road with a team of cyclists, united in our commitment to the childhood cancer community. Your support is welcome and needed. Please join me in this powerful and inspiring experience by helping to fund important childhood cancer charities across Canada. About Childhood Cancer: The causes of childhood cancers are, in most cases, unknown. The types of cancers that occur in children vary greatly from those seen in adults. They tend to occur in different parts of the body, and they respond differently to treatment. Leukemias, brain and other nervous system tumours, lymphomas (lymph node cancers), bone cancers, soft tissue sarcomas, and adrenal gland cancers are the most common cancers of children. In the early 1950s, less than 10 percent of childhood cancer patients could be cured. Today, more than 80 percent of children diagnosed with cancer become long-term survivors and the majority of them are considered cured. However, 60% of survivors have long lasting impacts due to the impact of treatments or their cancer. The National Kids Cancer Ride will fund research and other programs that improve the lives of children living with cancer.
