Allocation of Funds
In building on the success of the 2008 Sears National Kids Cancer Ride, the fundraising goal for this year’s Sears National Rid is a whopping $2M! 

The Sears National Kids Cancer Ride directs 100% of donations to the charities and programs we support.  This means that every dollar you donate will go directly to helping children and their families dealing with cancer.  We are able to do this because of our commitment to being a primarily volunteer-based organization, and through registration fees and the generous support of corporate sponsors.

The 2008 Sears National Kids Cancer Ride raised $1.1M in total.  The 16 Pediatric hematology / oncology centers in Canada shared in $333,000  These shared funds were divided among the centres based on the caseload of childhood cancer cases registered in each Centre . The Hospital for Sick Children received an incredible $75,000. 

The remaining funds of $770,000 was given to the National Pediatric Oncology Organization C-17 to support initiatives in childhood cancer across Canada, including education, research and support of children with cancer and their families.

The 2008 funds received by The Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta and the Alberta Children’s Hospital were used to support the summer student program, a valuable part of the research program.  Talented and committed students assist researchers in their work to help piece together the puzzle of childhood cancer.  These projects are working towards better, more effective treatments, and ultimately a cure.  Countless hours of research go into each step forward that is made in the medical field.  Students contribute significantly to the leadership of the principal researchers.  The summer student program also encourages students to consider pursuing a career in cancer research.  Unfortunately, the field of oncology is sadly facing a severe shortage of doctors and researchers, so getting students inspired in the quest for a cure can make a big difference.  It is an investment in the future.
