Let’s get one thing straight right away. I am not a cyclist.
I am a former National and Pan American champion sprint canoe paddler. I am a former provincial fastball champion, a double black belt and many other things… but not a cyclist.
Not yet, anyway.
At the request of an Investors Group colleague, I took the time to get to know the Coast to Coast Against Cancer foundation and some of the people involved. We came on board as a corporate sponsor in February of 2011 and this year will be the first ever “Tour for Kids” in Atlantic where
riders will be tackling the Cabot Trail and we are very proud to have helped make it possible.
We invited Jeff Rushton of Coast to Coast to Halifax to help us “launch” the sponsorship. After seeing some of the promotional videos that Jeff had prepared, I knew that even after having committed the company to a sizeable sponsorship, I still wasn’t doing enough.
So I did what any sane person would do. I committed to the extreme physical challenge of a national cycling event when I hadn’t been on a bike in over 20 years.
But I will be ready. Family, friends and colleagues have all sacrificed in some small way to allow me to prepare for this challenge and their efforts and understanding will be worthwhile. I am training and will be ready to take on the Quebec to Halifax leg of this national ride and do what I can to
help this noble cause. On September 22nd I will consider myself a cyclist.
One day we will be able to eliminate the phrase “your child has cancer” in every language in the world… and on that day we will be able to look back at this moment in time and say we were part of that.
