My biggest accomplishment to date: Being accepted as a 2011 National Rider!
Destined to Make a Difference
I have always been active since I was a child, participating in the track and field days at my public school. Living in the country, we were always outside riding our bikes into town, or riding to other communities with my mom. I have always enjoyed riding indoors and outdoors, and began to mountain bike about 10 years ago. A friend had introduced me to the sport and I became addicted! I was part of “Team GoodLife” and participated in several mountain bike racing events, along with a few of the 24 Hours of Adrenalin in Albion Hills. Adrenalin is exactly what I love about the sport!
In December 2010, I was at a friends’ house and got talking to Linda Kay, a 2010 National Rider, about her experience with Sears National Kids Cancer Ride that past September. I was inspired by Linda and her stories, and I felt compelled to apply for a 2011 National Rider. Linda was so supportive and told me she would help me train and prepare. I had also spoken to Laurie Vanderhaeghe, a 2009 National Rider, and when she heard I was applying to be a 2011 National Rider, she was just as supportive. I felt blessed to have these 2 inspirational women to help me.
Cancer is all around us. We all know of someone or several people who are currently fighting cancer, succumbed to the disease, or survived cancer. It is heartbreaking to think of anyone having to fight cancer, especially a child, when they should be playing and having fun with their friends.
In one month I lost 3 friends to this terrible disease which made me realize I needed to do something to help – I wanted to make a difference. I also wanted to show my kids that giving of yourself makes a difference to so many people, and actions speak louder than words. I want to be a part of improving the quality of lives of children living with and beyond cancer.

I am excited for the challenge of this ride and seeing our beautiful country over 16 days – but it’s not really about the ride. It’s about raising awareness and funds to help combat this horrible disease that affects the lives of our children.
